YANG YU-CHIAO

In different geographical environments — whether by the sea or deep in the mountains — the reflections from cliffs, plants, and minerals all vary; together, they form a “geography of sound.”

Yang Yu-Chiao is a multidisciplinary narrative and sound artist, a researcher of world oral literature, and an early music singer. Based by traditional folktale storytelling, Yang creates experimental sound performances and sound poetry. By integrating chalkboard writing of ancient pictographs, Yang has developed a unique 'Sonorus-script' performance form, blending sound and visual scripts. Collaborating across diverse music genres, Yang has performed in South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and other countries, and has participated in numerous international exhibitions. Publications include the polyphonic sound poetry collection Xi Xiang (肸蠁), the music history book Golden Pieces from Music’s Hidden Corners (音樂史暗處的金曲), and the oral literature study Oral Generative World (故事生成界). Since 2024, Yang has developed the participatory sound project The House of Onomatopoeia, supported by Taiwan’s C-LAB Creators program, with performances scheduled to commence in Paris and South Korea in 2026.
